Why You Should Take Cold Showers Every Day

It’s time to take the plunge!

1) Stimulates Weight Loss

Cold showers are great if you want to lose weight. This is because cold showers force your body to activate the body’s brown fat. Brown fat is used to insulate your body and keep your body warm. Therefore, when the body feels cold, the brown fat goes into overdrive, burning 15 times faster than it would otherwise. This helps stimulate weight loss.

2) Leads To Healthier Skin

Taking cold showers can actually lead to healthier skin. According to wellness expert Dr. Jacqueline Schaffer, MD, cold water tightens your pores, which prevents them from getting clogged with dirt. This gives your skin a healthier glow. Additionally, cold water cleans your skin while keeping your skin’s natural oils. Conversely, hot water strips away your skin of their natural oils, leaving them dry, which is bad for existing skin conditions like eczema or acne.

3) Increases Alertness

Taking a cold shower can make you feel invigorated and more alert. According to a meta-analysis of existing cold water immersion research in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, when you take a cold shower, your breathing will deepen in response to the cold. This is your body trying to keep you warm by increasing your overall oxygen intake. As a result, your heart rate will increase, resulting in a rush of blood through your entire body. This will give you a natural dose of energy for the day.

4) Enhances Sleep

Cold showers are great at helping you get to sleep at night. In the book “Dreamland: Adventures in the Strange Science of Sleep”, journalist David K. Randall mentions a study done by researchers in Lille, which found that people fell asleep faster and had a better overall quality of sleep following a cold shower right before bed. Why? Because cold showers lower your body’s core temperature. This makes it a lot more easier for your body to fall asleep easily. On the other hand, hot showers raise your body’s core temperature, which make it a lot more difficult for your body to fall asleep at night.

5) Relieves Depression

Depression affects at least 10 percent of American adults. Thankfully, there is a holistic method of treatment: cold showers. Research at the Department of Radiation Oncology at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine found that cold showers stimulate the brain’s “blue spot”– the area in your brain that produces noradrenaline — a chemical that helps mitigate depression. Additionally, cold showers also release endorphins, which are sometimes called happiness hormones. This often leads to feelings of well-being and optimism.

6) Boosts Recovery After Exercise

Athletes have known about this for a long time. According to a meta-analysis of 23 peer reviewed articles in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, immersing yourself in cold water can help enhance recovery and reduce feelings of fatigue. Fortunately, it doesn’t need to be an ice bath. Taking a quick cold shower after you exercise can also be just as effective. A study in the Journal of Athletic Training found that taking a cold shower can relieve heat exertion and reduce inflammation, compared with no treatment at all.

7) Strengthens Immunity

According to a study done by the Thrombosis Research Institute in England, researchers found that individuals who took daily cold showers saw an increase in the number of virus-fighting white blood cells compared to individuals who took hot showers. White blood cells are responsible for fighting diseases. This may explain why a clinical trial in the Netherlands showed that people who took cold showers called out of work less.

8) Improves Circulation

Good blood circulation is vital for overall cardiovascular health. When cold water hits your body, blood will start moving to your organs in order to keep them warm. This increases your overall blood circulation, which can help you avoid hypertension and the hardening of arteries.
